Telomere testing is a blood test that can reveal an incredible amount of information about your health, including the amount of wear and tear that you’ve put on your body. The test offers a snapshot of the length of your telomeres, which are the protective caps at the end of the chromosomes in your cells.
Why Telomere Testing is Important?
Telomeres’ function is to protect the integrity of our genes and prevent cellular DNA from mutating. As we age, so do our cells. Telomeres become shorter and shorter until they don’t allow cell replication. Although this is a normal biological process, the cell will stop dividing and die.
Since individuals do not age at the same rate, telo-mapping establishes important biomarkers, which Cenegenics’ physicians use to make preventive corrections, and to anticipate the onset of certain age-related diseases and disabilities.
Telomere Testing Process
How Are Telomeres Measured?
After taking the blood sample, we calculate your telomere score based on your average telomere length in peripheral whole blood cells. Then, the average is compared to telomere lengths from a population sample in your same age range. This way we determine your score.
How Accurate is Telomere Testing?
The way your sample is processed makes a huge difference to the accuracy of the result. Cenegenics has 25 years of experience you can rely on. Telomere testing results vary from person to person and could be done once a year to reevaluate your score and make adjustments in your program if necessary.
Does Telomere Testing Really Reveal Your Biological Age?
Telomere testing provides an indication of your biological age. According to a report from the British Lung Foundation, prematurely shortened telomere length is associated with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). [1]
Telomere testing is essentially like looking into the crystal ball of your health for the purpose of future preparation.
Telomere Test Scores
What is a good Telomere Length?
The average length of telomeres when we are conceived is 15,000 bases, by the time we are born, telomeres have shortened to 10,000 bases. This will continue to happen over the course of our lives. Our cells continue dividing to support growth, fight off diseases, and repair injuries. Still, the metric to assess telomere length in an individual is the percentile of the normal range. A person with a short telomere syndrome has telomeres as long as 1% of the healthy population for the same age range. [2]
At What Age do the Telomeres Shorten?
A clinical trial at The Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Precision Genomics Clinic at Mayo has been testing how physicians can identify families with short telomere syndromes based on the various associated conditions and going gray before age 30. [3]
Like we mentioned above, a newborn’s telomeres can be around 10,000 bases in length, as compared with 3,000 in adults and only 1,500 in the elderly. After the newborn phase, the number of base pairs tends to decline by approximately 20 to 40 per year. For example, by the time a person reaches the age of 40, their telomeres could have lost up to 1,600 base pairs. However, aging is not the only factor associated with telomere shortening; other factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and obesity also affect telomere length. [4]
Telomere Testing & Health Optimization
How Can I Lengthen My Telomeres?
There are multiple studies showing evidence that changes in your lifestyle, healthy diet, exercise, and proper supplementation can lengthen telomeres and improve key elements of immunes cell aging. For example, one research from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) showed evidence that changes in lifestyle may lengthen telomeres to a degree that it improves people’s overall health. The research also indicates that longer telomeres are associated with fewer illnesses. [5]
Cenegenics is ready to help you identify the length of your telomeres and recommend the program that’s right for you.
