Cholesterol is a waxy substance naturally produced by the liver in the form of sterol, a type of lipid (fat), which is crucial to the development of cell membranes, vitamin D, and key hormones. Despite the key role it plays in our bodies, high amounts of bad cholesterol are a threat to your heart health.
How Can I Differentiate Between Bad and Good Cholesterol?
Since cholesterol is a type of blood fat, it can’t dissolve or move through our bloodstream on its own. Therefore, it attaches to proteins in order to be transported throughout the body. This combination of cholesterol and proteins is called a lipoprotein. There are two main forms of lipoproteins: low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol; and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), commonly referred to as the “good” cholesterol.
LDL carries particles of cholesterol through the blood and accumulates within the artery walls, causing them to harden and narrow. HDL, on the other hand, carries excess cholesterol back to the liver.
If your body has too much LDL and low HDL, you could face an increased risk for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. [2]
Checking Your Cholesterol
How Can I Tell If My Bad Cholesterol Is Too High?
The only way to test for high cholesterol is to have a blood draw. According to the American Heart Association, adults over the age of 20 should have their cholesterol tested at least every four years. But these figures will vary based on age, gender, hereditary factors, body weight, diet, and other lifestyle habits like smoking or sedentarism.
Once tested, you must know where you stand. Here is a general scale of LDL cholesterol numbers and what they mean.
Less than 100: optimal
100-129: near optimal
130-159: borderline
160-189: high
190 or higher: very high
If high LDL (the bad cholesterol) sounds an alarm, low HDL (the good cholesterol) does also. The ideal HDL score should be around 60 or more. An HDL cholesterol that falls below 40 is considered a risk factor. [3]
What Are the Dangers of High Cholesterol?
High LDL cholesterol or hypercholesterolemia, increases the risk for heart diseases, which can lead to heart attack or stroke. This happens because fatty deposits build up on the artery walls forming a cholesterol plaque that restricts blood flow. LDL can also create blood clots. When a blood clot blocks the artery in the heart or brain, heart attacks or strokes occur.
There’s also a link between high cholesterol and high blood pressure as a result of the body’s inability to clear cholesterol from the bloodstream, adding an excess of cholesterol to the artery walls. When arteries become stiff and narrow from deposits, the heart has to work overtime to pump blood through them. This causes blood pressure to go up and up.
Over time, high blood pressure can damage arteries by creating tears in artery walls where excess cholesterol can collect. [4]
